1. Preamble: Why the Old Path Failed
The repository contains three generations of attempts to connect the ENE semantic framework to fundamental physics:
- External numerological audits (
docs/audits/MATHEMATICAL_AUDIT.md) — audited IHC-paper claims such asm(k) = m_e φ^k,Λ_QCD = 3 m_e φ^11, and the proton/electron ratio1836 = 4 × 27 × 17. Verdict: numerical fits and heuristics, not first-principles derivations. - Bit-layer proposal (
docs/ingested/chagpt-414-1043.md) — sketched a LeanParticleKindinductive and conservation predicates, but it was never implemented. - Speculative engineering entries (
docs/project/PTOS_THEORY_LEDGER.md) — contained explicit self-flagging: "NOT IMPLEMENTED — Violates Standard Model."
The common failure mode was category error: trying to derive physics from information theory or topology, instead of recognizing physics as the observational boundary against which any semantic system must be accountable.
This document closes those approaches and replaces them with a rigorous, implementable paradigm.
2. The Paradigm Shift
The Standard Model is not derived from semantics. It is the axiomatic boundary between semantics and observable reality.
We call this the Observational Interface Paradigm (OIP).
Instead of asking:
"Can we derive quark masses from φ-geometric shells?"
We ask:
"Given that the Standard Model is empirically true, what is the minimal lawful semantic framework that can interface with it without contradiction?"
This is a grounding exercise, not a reduction exercise.
3. Core Tenets
Tenet 1: Particle Kinds are Lemma Types
Just as the lemma run is the canonical type for the token set {ran, running, runs}, the particle electron is the canonical type for all electron states (spin up, spin down, different momenta, different positions).
Tenet 2: Conserved Quantities are the True Bits
Physical description is not carried by narrative or spatial coordinates at the deepest layer; it is carried by conserved quantities:
- charge
- mass
- spin
- energy
- momentum
- baryon number
- lepton number
These are the semantic atoms of physics.
Tenet 3: Interactions are Lawful Paths
A Feynman diagram is an ENE Path through the semantic graph. A vertex is a Decomposition or Recomposition. The path is lawful iff every step preserves the relevant conserved quantities.
Tenet 4: Measurement is Projection Collapse
Quantum measurement is not a metaphysical mystery in this framework; it is the epistemic projection from a hidden (N-space) state to a visible (observable) state. The "collapse" is the act of extracting a determinate observation from a superposition of semantic paths.
Tenet 5: Fields are Manifolds
The electromagnetic field, the Higgs field, the electron field — these are manifolds in the ENE NState framework. Particles are excitations (local deformations) of these manifolds.
4. Formal Mapping: ENE ↔ Physics

5. The Lean 4 Physics Layer
The paradigm is already implemented in:
0-Core-Formalism/lean/Semantics/Semantics/Physics/
Boundary.lean -- ParticleKind, QuantityKind, Particle
Conservation.lean -- totalQuantity, conserved, LawfulInteraction
Interaction.lean -- PhysicalPath, core conserved quantities
Projection.lean -- Measurement, FaithfulMeasurement
Tests.lean -- Verified examples (e⁻ + e⁺ → γ + γ)
These modules compile cleanly and extend the existing 18-module ENE semantic database without breaking any existing theorems.
Example: Electron-Positron Annihilation
structure Particle where
kind : ParticleKind
quantities : List Quantity
deriving Repr, DecidableEq
def exampleElectron : Particle := {
kind := ParticleKind.electron,
quantities := [
{ kind := QuantityKind.charge, value := -1 },
{ kind := QuantityKind.leptonNumber, value := 1 }
]
}
def correctAnnihilation : Interaction := {
inputs := [exampleElectron, examplePositron],
outputs := [examplePhoton, examplePhoton]
}
theorem example_charge_conserved :
conserved QuantityKind.charge correctAnnihilation := by
unfold conserved totalQuantity
unfold correctAnnihilation exampleElectron examplePositron examplePhoton
native_decide
This is not a toy example — it is a compile-time proof that the semantic representation of a physical process respects charge conservation.
6. What This Is Not (Anti-Claims)
To prevent misreading, the following claims are explicitly rejected by this paradigm:
- We do not derive particle masses from topology or numerology.
- The quark shell map
m(k) = m_e φ^kis a prior paper's hypothesis, not a theorem of this framework.
- The quark shell map
- We do not claim to solve the vacuum energy problem.
- Cosmological toy models remain exactly that: toy models.
- We do not claim that consciousness causes collapse.
- Measurement is an epistemic projection, not a metaphysical intervention.
- We do not unify the fundamental forces.
- The framework respects the Standard Model gauge group structure; it does not attempt to couple EM and strong forces directly.
- We do not claim that the universe "runs on" our semantic framework.
- The framework is a model for lawful assemblage semantics, not an ontological claim about reality.
7. Roadmap
Phase 1: Harden the Boundary Layer ✅
- Define
ParticleKind,QuantityKind,Particle - Define
Interactionandconserved - Prove conservation for e⁻e⁺ annihilation
Phase 2: Extend to Gauge Fields
- Add
FieldKindinductive (electromagnetic, weak, strong, Higgs, gravitational) - Define
FieldExcitationasParticle - Model gauge transformations as
NStatecoordinate changes
Phase 3: Encode the Standard Model Lagrangian (Symbolic)
- Add
LagrangianTermstructure - Encode kinetic, mass, and interaction terms as semantic graph edges
- Prove that each term preserves the relevant symmetries
Phase 4: Quantum Path Integrals as Semantic Search
- Model the path integral as a sum over
PhysicalPath - Use the ENE
Pathadmissibility predicate to prune unphysical paths - Connect to the existing
WitnessandCanonmodules
Phase 5: Experimental Interface
- Build a translator: given a
Particlelist, emit a MadGraph / FeynArts symbolic input - Build a validator: given an experimental decay width, check conservation in the semantic model
8. Conclusion
The Physical Semantics Paradigm does not attempt to replace physics with information theory. It does something more modest and more rigorous:
It provides a formal semantic layer that can speak about physical objects, interactions, and measurements without violating the empirical boundary set by the Standard Model.
This is the correct stopping point. Anything beyond this is either physics (to be settled by experiment) or mathematics (to be settled by proof). The semantic framework's job is to stay lawful at the interface.
